Ritucharya: Your diet guide for every season

Ayurveda lays a lot of emphasis on a suitable diet and regimen for every season. According to seasons the year is divided into six parts. The northward movement of the sun (uttarayana) and its effect of dehydration bring about three seasons beginning from late winter to summer. This is known as adanakaala. Adana Kaala Shishir (January – March) Dominated by sun or agni. Sun is bright, winds dry, causing dryness in the environment. Promotes drugs with bitter, astringent and pungent tastes which weaken the body. Vasanta (March – May) Grishma (May – July) Visarga Kaala Varsha (July – September) Dominated by the moon. Cooling and soothing property of the moon. Promotes drugs with sour, salty and sweet tastes which strengthen the body. Sharat (September – November) Hemant (November – January) The southward movement of the sun (dakshinayana) has the effect of hydration and gives rise to three seasons beginning from monsoons to early winte...

Video | 6 unknown facts about conch (shankh)

Even if one does not blow the shankh, and puts it to his/her ear, a definite vibration or sound can be heard. Shankh or conch is considered a gift of the ocean and was one of the 14 ratnas produced during the Samudra Manthan — the legendary churning of the ocean. From here we got everything. 1. SOUNDS FROM SHANKH Even if one does not blow the shankh, and puts it to his/her ear, a definite vibration or sound can be heard. This is the sound of Om, the underlying sound of manifested creation. The shankh is believed to be one of first sound producing agencies, through which the sound of Om emanates. Blowing of the shankh also produces the sound of Om. It is called Shankhnad. 2. PURPOSE OF SHANKH A symbol of Lord Vishnu, the shankh, when blown, its sound is known to dispel negative energy. It also declares the victory of good over evil and hence was used as a war trumpet in earlier times. Interestingly, the sound of every shankh is different and in olden days wa...

Next, inhale from the left nost...

How Yoga can help you manage anger (Part 1)

Yogi Ashwini says from anger comes delusion, from delusion a lapse of memory, from the lapse of memory there is a destruction of buddhi, and from the destruction of buddhi person is destroyed. Have you lately been getting very angry? Is anger your second nature? Are you angry all the time? If your answer is yes then you are moving towards the next problem after anger which is hypertension. Hypertension is a manifestation of the weakening of the heart. Excess of negativity and hypertension weakens the muscles of the heart, which is controlled by the Mooladhar chakra.  Just relax and rub your hands together to warm them up and slowly bring them together at your mooladhar chakra. You'll feel some tingling at the tips of your fingers. If the chakra is weak then you will feel nothing and your hands will come together without any resistance. If it's strong, you'll feel pulsations and resistance as your hands try to come near each other. The basic reason for th...

Yoga and anger management – I

Have you been getting very angry lately? Is anger your second nature? Are you angry all the time? If your answer is yes then you are moving towards the next problem after anger which is hypertension. It is a manifestation of the weakening of the heart. Excess of negativity and hypertension weakens the heart muscles controlled by the Mooladhar chakra. Just relax and rub your hands together to warm them up and slowly bring them together at your mooladhar chakra. You’ll feel some tingling at the tips of your fingers.  If the chakra is weak, you will feel nothing and your hands will come together without any resistance. If it’s strong, you’ll feel pulsations and resistance as your hands try to come near each other. The basic reason for the mool chakra becoming weak is hyperactivity which exhausts the vital prana. Don’t forget that prana is limited. The cells of your body cannot be recharged. You can only spend it and hyperactivity ensures you spend it fast. If you want to...

YOGA FOR KIDNEY STONES

There are two bean shaped organs in the body, one to the left and the other to the right in the pelvic region, and their function is filtration of the fluids of the body. The residue after filtration is then expelled from the body as urine. I am referring to the kidneys. Kidneys assume greater significance in our lives, given that are body is 60-70% water. And this water needs to be regulated constantly. The kidneys are so fine an organ that they remove all the solids from the water. Certain solids which are heavy and cannot be expelled completely, get calcified. This leads to kidney stones. When the kidney stones grow in size, they block the top of the kidney or are pushed into the urethra thereby blocking it. Early symptoms are pain. And this pain need not be limited to the lower back area, and may even be experienced in the lower chest area.  This is because when the kidneys gasp for prana, they can put pressure on any nerve in the body. Another symptom is ...
