Yog is the final frontier and the ultimate subject

There are so many things in our lives. We prioritise various things/aspects as per their relative importance. Whatever you give first preference in life, gives you first preference in return. For example, while with a group of friends, you bump into an old childhood friend and instead of greeting you first, he decides to greet the rest of the group. How would you feel? Will you still give preference to that person? No, he will no longer be your priority; instead, you will wait for the time when you can do the same to him. This holds true for everything, including the subject of yog. There are some students who stay up all night, a day before the exam to prepare for it and there are those who start months before. In fact, at times, they cut down on their television, outings, etc, and immerse themselves in studies... and it shows in their results.   Yog is the ultimate subject, there is nothing beyond it. It is the subject that will eventually not just te...

CHAKRA BEEJ KRIYA – Mooladhar Chakra

There is more to us than what meets the eye, the physical body is only an aspect of our existence which is directly controlled by the etheric layer, some called it the aura, vedic rishis called it the pranamaya kosha. Chakra beej kriya, the premilinary practices of which were intorduced in the previous article taps into this layer by means of sounds and asans to stimulate the chakras. There are six major chakras in the body, each responsible for specific functions, needs and desires. As we progress in the chakra beej asans, we move from the grosser to the subtler chakras, understanding and balancing them as we move along. Having performed the basic rotations and spine asanas, we move to the kriya for the mooladhar chakra. Corresponding to the location of base of the spine, it is at this chakra at the phenomenal power of kundalini energy rests. Mooladhar is the base chakra for humans; it is the highest in animals. It controls the survival instinct. Ruled by the earth ...

Body sculpting Asans (Part 4)

I n the last article of this series, we discussed how over-exercising leads to ageing and also how asanas are not exercises, for they work through consciousness. We learnt nine  asanas for body sculpting from Sanatan Kriya. Continuing from where we left in the last issue, we will take you through the final  five asanas of the set. Note:  While performing asanas ensure that you are wearing comfortable clothes made from natural materials; avoid deodorants, perfumes and aftershave… basically anything artificial. Keep your eyes closed and maintain internal awareness of the body part that is being worked upon. Maintain ujjai breathing and synchronise the movement with your breath. Uthanpad (raised leg):   This asana strengthens the abdominal, pelvic and perennial muscles and massages the organs of the lower body. It is also beneficial in correcting prolapse. Lie down on the back, placing your arms on either side of your body. Inhale, slo...

Defining the process of evolution in a human being

The entire Creation runs on prana shakti, the eternal life-force, an all-pervading phenomenon. All objects, animate and inanimate, are made of prana – including the five elements—prithvi (earth), jal (water), akash (ether), vayu (air), and agni (fire). These elements or the Paanch Mahaprana exist in various permutations and combinations to form different things in Creation including our body. It is these elements that make one woman pretty while another not so; cause one man to be healthy and another to be diseased. Paanch Mahaprana, is the immediate force which governs the physical body and with this the mudras (movements of the hands & fingers). The relation of all five elements with their respective fingers means we can, at will, increase or decrease specific elements in the body, which also forms the basis of our chakras which as we know control the functioning of the physical body. But, before we move on to the kriya, it is essential to understand how these eleme...

Ayurveda: Are you a VATA?

Countering Obesity

The human body is a combination of cells, they combine in various permutations and form different systems responsible for all positive and negative effects which ultimately influence the whole body. A problem that plagues everyone today, irrespective of age is the need to lose weight. And so fad diets, liposuctions, excessive workouts and other alternative body-harming solutions/therapies are resorted to. What one needs to understand, is that obesity isn’t always the by-product of excessive food intake or unhealthy lifestyles, but also emotional congestion. According to Ayurveda, obesity manifests itself in different forms in your body depending on your predominant dosha. And while for some it’s easier to lose for others it gets very tough. A combination of prescribed herbs, asans and change in diets will only attend to the physical body, scratching only the surface rather than eradicating the root cause. Here I detail to you from my book, ‘Sanatan Kriya-Essence of Yoga...

Fight germs and detoxify your body with Jal Neti

In today’s world, where appearances run supreme, everyone wants a better body, a glowing skin and a perfect face. Result: while large MNCs thrive, for mankind it spells doom as we continue to ingest toxins ‘with pleasure’ through our so-called fad diets, chemical-laced cosmetics and damaging body altering techniques. It is essential to inculcate a habit of not only regularly cleansing our bodies externally & internally, but also ensuring that through the process diseases are kept at bay. Jal Neti or nasal cleansing is an ancient vedic technique handed down to us thousands of years ago by our vedic seers, and now popularly coined by the West as Nasal Irrigation. This technique helps not only cleanse the system but also slow down the ageing process. Benefits:  It is highly effective in ridding the body of flu viruses (particularly prevalent during Monsoons) from the nasal tract before they enter the blood stream and cause life threatening diseases. When ...

Relief of Joint Pain

Fighting those Joint Pains

While most arthritis patients take to physiotherapists for treatment, they are unaware of the psychosomatic origins of the disease. Arthritis is essentially a manifestation of emotional congestions that arrest most people by their late twenties. These congestions cause the vital fluid in the joints to dry up slowly. Likewise a lot of friction is produced in the joints, making them brittle in the long run. Since the problem finds its roots in something that is beyond physical, the solution too calls for a more holistic approach. In the book ‘Sanatan Kriya, The Ageless Dimension’, I have detailed a technique to get riddance from heavy emotions by cutting connections with heavy prana from the surya chakra. Sit with a straight back, arms straight, palms on the floor close to hips and legs stretched forward. Keeping your eyes shut, do the following set of asanas. JAANU AKARSHAN – Contract your right knee pushing it into the floor. Hold for a count of 7. Release and repeat sev...

Anti-Ageing: Deepan Kriya

A common thought that prevails over most people in the 30s and 40s is how not to put on weight. With increasing age, the metabolic processes of the body become sluggish and there is a decrease in physical activity. In such a situation a person engaged day-in- and-day- out in the pursuit of five senses and collection for himself, starts to gain weight and falls prey to the myriad diseases linked with an obese body. Ill-informed and desperate, he cuts down on certain components of the diet arbitrarily or consults a dietician. A dietician, too, only understands the physical aspect of body and in most cases, prescribes reducing the fat component of diet. The physical body or annamaya kosha is defined in ayurveda as ‘Dosha dhatu mala mool hi shariram’, i.e., the body is composed of doshas, dhatus and malas. These three factors direct and manipulate the physical manifestation of the body, for the body is the site of manifestation of consciou...
