Ritucharya: Your diet guide for every season

Ayurveda lays a lot of emphasis on a suitable diet and regimen for every season. According to seasons the year is divided into six parts. The northward movement of the sun (uttarayana) and its effect of dehydration bring about three seasons beginning from late winter to summer. This is known as adanakaala. Adana Kaala Shishir (January – March) Dominated by sun or agni. Sun is bright, winds dry, causing dryness in the environment. Promotes drugs with bitter, astringent and pungent tastes which weaken the body. Vasanta (March – May) Grishma (May – July) Visarga Kaala Varsha (July – September) Dominated by the moon. Cooling and soothing property of the moon. Promotes drugs with sour, salty and sweet tastes which strengthen the body. Sharat (September – November) Hemant (November – January) The southward movement of the sun (dakshinayana) has the effect of hydration and gives rise to three seasons beginning from monsoons to early winte...

Yog is the road to pure bliss

Fulfilment of desires is not evolution. It is sadhana which involves changes within and leads to ultimate freedom. Ayurveda says that the body is composed of three doshas—Vat, Pitt and Kapha. The term ‘dosha’ translates as a defect or an impurity. That is, the body is inherently impure. There is no such thing as negative or positive because everything around that is physical, is bound by time. It is bound to end, and the time for it to end is decided the moment you get it, irrespective of whether that thing is good or bad.  The biggest pain is not in losing something but in getting something which is dear to you. The dearer a thing is to you, the more expensive it proves to be, as that much more pain it will cause to you when it leaves you. The day you get something, that day itself the pain that comes with it is also decided. Similarly the day you take the body, the doshas that come along with it are also determined because the meaning of the body is that which is...

YOGA‬ TO THE RESCUE OF MODERN MALADIES

The subtle spectrum of creation

By now we have understood that Prana is the energy we breathe, the energy we see, think, feel, hear, imagine and perceive in different forms.  Prana is everything.  It is entire Creation. It is the gyan we receive. At the physical level, it is the energy that gets translated through various layers (koshas) and manifests as the physical. Manik , a NASA scientist, carried out an experiment, staying without solid food for nearly 120 days, only on prana from sunlight minimally aided by small quantities of liquids. It becomes important to note that human life continues to exist as long as it can retain prana of a certain frequency even in the absence of food. Our bodies absorb prana and utilise it for vital functions. Used-up prana is given back to the environment and is further used as life force by beings lower in the evolutionary ladder. This process continues till it reaches the lowest form of Creation. Different pranic frequencies have different colours, part of a sp...

Detachment that frees one from pain

You come into this world alone. When you leave, you will go back alone. No one will accompany you, no matter how close they are to you. Pause for a minute and think; the majority of your problems stem from your near and dear ones. The smallest things regarding a close one affect you deeply. The root cause of all arguments, fights, emotional turmoil, congestions and business disputes, too, are these relationships. Hence it is safe to conclude that, for the greater part of our lives, you are troubled not by absolute strangers, but by people you know. All relationships are based on the basic principle of give and take. This is a payback of karmas from your previous births as well as from this lifetime. You get associated with some people because they need something from you and you need something in return. In the absence of this interdependence, the relationship will cease to exist. You remain caught in this cycle of give and take, lifetime after lifetime. You derive pleasure out o...
