What brought you to this world?

Pause a moment to think, what is it that brought you to this world.  All of us at some point were just a sperm competing with the millions that are produced daily in the human body. The reason why we were born is because we pushed and knocked off the rest of them to come first in the race. This is our basic nature, the reason why we are here - ‘me first’ or simply, selfishness. It is this selfishness that defines everything that we do, including our relationship with people. This is the reason why human relationships do not work out. The reason why you are with someone – be it your friends, parents or spouse is because you want something from them. You are with them only till the time you are getting that from them. As soon as that stops, you will not even look at them. You can try it sometime. The deepest and fondest of relationships come to an end as soon as that give and take is over, and all that remains is grief of what you have lost, what you could have got. Y...

Yog is the road to pure bliss

Fulfilment of desires is not evolution. It is sadhana which involves changes within and leads to ultimate freedom. Ayurveda says that the body is composed of three doshas—Vat, Pitt and Kapha. The term ‘dosha’ translates as a defect or an impurity. That is, the body is inherently impure. There is no such thing as negative or positive because everything around that is physical, is bound by time. It is bound to end, and the time for it to end is decided the moment you get it, irrespective of whether that thing is good or bad.  The biggest pain is not in losing something but in getting something which is dear to you. The dearer a thing is to you, the more expensive it proves to be, as that much more pain it will cause to you when it leaves you. The day you get something, that day itself the pain that comes with it is also decided. Similarly the day you take the body, the doshas that come along with it are also determined because the meaning of the body is that which is...

LIFE IS AN EXPERIENCE

"It is the desires that tie one to the individual consciousness. Once these are removed, the being becomes one with the supreme consciousness" -  Yogi Ashwini Love is the four-letter word on which epics have been composed, movies based, songs and poems attributed. And yet, if you look at any great love story, you will find that the end is always tragic; the story ends with the separation of the lovers. The truth is that there is no such thing as love, and realising this is enlightenment. Every person in the world is looking for love, yet there is hardly anyone who is aware of it. Today one spends a lifetime in the pursuit of the physical; lust and possession are mistranslated as love. Love actually is in letting go of the people you love, to give them the freedom to live their own; it lies in sacrifice and being there for them unconditionally without expecting anything in return. In the realm of energy, the colour pink translates as love. If you look around you wi...

Karma: All you need to know

Yogi Ashwini, guiding light of Dhyan Foundation

Spirituality and Humanity: Missing Components of Business

How does one express spirituality? The most basic way is through one's deeds. These deeds involve being a better human being who is sensitive towards other human beings, that is, being humane. This is the guiding theme of this year's World Confluence on Humanity, Power and Spirituality. Organised by the Srei Foundation, Business Economics and the Institute of Inspiration and Self-Development, the annual World Confluence, has since the last four years, sought to bring together people from different career paths onto a common platform whose hallmark is spirituality through service. Eschewing doctrinaire and divisive interpretation of religion, the World Confluence seeks a commingling of the beliefs and practices of different faiths, which elevate and empower the mind, soul and body. The purpose is to harmonise thoughts with actions, and bring unity rather than create divisions among people of different faiths; the binding factor is the expression of spirituality through h...

Attract a guru, not a Ravana in your life

Life is born out of ‘desire’ and we remain prisoners of this desire over countless lifetimes. During these births, the soul remains oblivious of the purpose of life and gets more and more entangled in  various attractions of the physical world — in relationships, career, properties and places, occupations and hobbies. He is totally immersed in the web and glue of maya, bound to the senses and their objects. What, then, is the purpose of life? It appears to be in experiencing desires which brought you here. And desires are unending. They start with the cycle of karma — one leads to the next and it becomes a successive movement, one that continues forever, until the soul decides this quest is over and finally decides to get back home. But until you return all you took from Creation, you will keep coming back. You have to pay back every karma you play out in your life.  It might be okay to experience and enjoy pleasures, but it is also important to remember the purpose of...

Arrest Ageing With Yog

Time is constantly changing. The higher you are on the ladder of evolution, the faster is the time for you. Ved Vyas explains in the Bhagwatam that a day of Brahma equals to 1,000 cycles of the four yugas. The lower is the dimension that you belong to, the slower the time passes for you. An insect that hovers in the night lives its entire life in just one night, the same life for you witnesses 70 to 80 years.  I had learnt a specific art from someone who is a foreign national. Most of us who were learning the art put his age at around 70-80 years. Then, one day, he told us that he is 44. Half the students ran away thinking that if that is the way he looks at 44, what will become of them if they follow his steps. I, however, stayed on and later realised that yog is never in isolation, it is the combination of right thought, right action, celibacy. Not practicing in totality makes the body unable to hold the immense force that is generated and one keeps falling sick and starts age...

Desire and Rebirth

Desire and Rebirth - 1 You are what you desire. Depending on your desires, you take up a body. The body here does not refer to what you see in the mirror, but extends beyond to include the five sheaths — annamaya, pranamaya, manomaya, vigyanmaya and anandmaya. The soul stays in the body till the time there is prana in it. Death is a state when there is no prana left in the body, and hence the soul leaves the body. Traditionally, when a convict was hung to death, after taking him off the noose, the hangman put slashes at the bottom of the feet. Ever wondered why? When one is hung, all the prana rushes to the bottom. By making slashes, it was ensured that no prana remains in the body so that the soul can exit. There are many who have survived near-death experiences at Dhyan Ashram. The healers were able to revive them because there was some prana left in the body and the soul took shelter in that prana. The healers then replenished the pranic body and restored the persons back t...
