FODDER STATIONS PROVIDE RELIEF TO CATTLE IN KOLLEGAL

In an attempt to mitigate the acute drought-triggered fodder crisis in Kollegal taluk of Chamrajnagar district, the district administration along with volunteers from non-governmental groups has intensified relief activities by setting up gaushalas and fodder stations in affected settlements. One such gaushala set up by the district administration with the assistance of the department of animal husbandry and veterinary sciences is providing fodder and water to as many as 1,500 cattle in Dantehalli village. This is in addition to fodder stations set up in the nearby Kuratti Hosur panchayat. As of now, six temporary gaushalas and at least 10 fodder stations have reportedly been set up as a temporary relief measure for affected farmers. “We have set up a gaushala in Dantehalli to provide free fodder and water for the cattle of the village. We are also closely monitoring the situation on a daily basis. The additional chief secretary also took stock of the situation on Monday,” ...

FARM ANIMALS DIE OF HUNGER IN BONE-DRY KOLLEGAL, KARNATAKA

With four years of drought on the trot, fodder is hard to come by. Cattle are no longer allowed to forage inside forests after incidents of tree-cutting. Things will only get worse now even though govt says it is setting up gaushalas and providing fodder. Chamarajanagar district’s Kollegal taluk is technically just 142 km from Bengaluru city but the change of scene is so dramatic that you could be in another world. On the parched earth is heartbreaking evidence of a summer that’s turning out to be fatal. Open fields near Kuratti Hosur panchayat, especially the drought-hit Dantehalli, are littered with rotting carcasses of cows that perished due to lack of fodder. Mirror’s team spotted the remains of a goat, five head of cattle and some skeletal remains. A few other animals roamed around looking for food, barely alive in their skeletal and dehydrated state. Rain has been scanty here and while drinking water is available as of now, fodder for livestock has become a big pr...

Play a part in saving innocent animals

Recently, a video went viral on social media showing a man from south India brutally beating a dog. The poor creature tried to escape, but the man was determined to batter him to death. This sort of cruelty makes you wonder whom the label of ‘animal’ is more suited to. But also sad that, under the circumstances, is how other people are mute witnesses to such behaviour. Not opposing such cruelty is as shameful as doing the act, says internationally renowned Yogi Ashwini, the founder of the Dhyan Foundation. The internationally renowned Vedic scholar and yoga guru points out that karma “will play out sooner or later and the impact is always manifold”. Enthusiastic young volunteers of the Dhyan Foundation Animal Brigade work to save innocent animals, who are likely to come under attack. Anyone can do the same by sending a tweet to spread social awareness or by mailing concerned authorities. Also, visit  www.dhyanfoundation.com  for details about the initiatives of the an...

Slaughtered, sealed and delivered

Counted as one of the world’s most exotic locations attracting tourists from all over the country as well as the world, Goa is a haven of “good times” for most people around the world. Apart from the tourists, locals and fun-seekers, there is another population residing in Goa, for whom the city-state is anything but exotic. On the occasion of Eid, 9 calves, cows and bulls were brutally slaughtered in broad daylight in Goa. Open slaughter of animals is strictly prohibited in India. Slaughtering cows is not allowed. The slaughter of calves is illegal and the butchering of bulls below the age of 14 without a ‘fit to to slaughter’ certificate from a recognized vet and outside of an authorised slaughterhouse is completely against the law. Yet the animals were slaughtered, the meat of the animals was stuffed in polythene bags and their bodies left in the open. The tails, intestines and skinned remains of the animals were found littered behind Nagesh Garden Magaon, South Goa. A ca...

Illegal mass slaughtering in a regularised slaughter house

Ghazipur slaughterhouse in Delhi is one of the biggest and modernized house of death, which is authorized to kill a thousand animals every day, but the daily count easily exceeds 5000. The animals, mostly buffaloes (some pregnant too), are first electrocuted and then callously slaughtered. The misery of these poor animals begins right from the journey to the slaughterhouses. They are not fed for days. They are kept in crowded places. They are tortured with sticks. Even pregnant animals are not spared and are beaten up mercilessly. The buffaloes are electrocuted with live wire instead of being stunned. The sight is too barbaric to be described in words. The meat of the slaughtered animals doesn’t undergo ante-mortem or post mortem examinations. Quality analysis is also done by the export companies in factories with no CCTV coverage. They claim that all the cameras are dysfunctional. Suspicious, isn’t it? Volunteers of Dhyan Foundation are campaigning for ethical treatment of a...

Help us save monkeys

As per Section 62 of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972, Indian States can send a list of wild animals to the Centre with a request to declare them vermin and enable their killing. The Central Government has the power to, by notification, declare any wild animal vermin, other than those specified in Schedule I and part 11 of Schedule H of the law, for any area for a given period of time. Till the notification is in force, these animals will be deprived of any kind of protection whatsoever under that law. Vermin are wild animals which are harmful to crops or people. A notification was issued on March 14, 2016 by the Central government, declaring monkeys vermin in Shimla for a period of six months and vide another notification in May this year, to treat monkeys as vermin for a period of one year in 38 tehsils of the State. The Himachal Pradesh government has sterilised one lakh monkeys till date out of the two lakhs plus reported monkeys in the State. The government has stated that t...

Dhyan Foundation fighting to save neglected animals in India

What goes around, comes around Recently 50 dogs were poisoned and burnt alive in Keezhampur village of Kancheepuram, in Tamilnadu. Charred carcases were found in the village, spreading the stench across the village. Many crows, birds and cats died later due to feeding on these poisoned carcases. The atrocities on animals are increasing manifold in all possible ways. Some people feel that killing animals is not a sin since they don’t have souls. The reason behind this vague belief is that the weight of animals remains same before and after death whereas there is always a difference in the weight of a person before and after the soul departs. People consider it as weight of the soul, but it is the weight of karma. To this effect in 1901, an experiment was conducted in Massachusetts by Dr. Duncan MacDougall over six dying patients who were placed on specially made weight scales just prior to their deaths. His intention was to weigh each body before and after death to determine a...

TIME TO PROTECT ANIMALS

"Recently, monkeys have been declared as ‘vermin’ in the city of Shimla, allowing for their culling. These monkeys harass people and destroy agricultural produce, reason out the policy makers. The above is a clear indicator of the rise of asuric vritti among humans that has limited their thinking to the self-destructing philosophy of I-me-myself. Their buddhi is polluted and they cannot think of benefit of creation. An animal needs food and shelter. Declaring monkey as vermin is an example of anti-humanity as it is the land mafia that has usurped their forests by breaking every law possible and it is them who are instigating the policies to kill them so that their lands can be taken over. It is this mafia that is vermin, not the monkeys."  Yogi Ashwini Time to Protect Animals  ‪#‎ NewIndianExpress‬ http://www.newindianexpress.com/…/…/05/21/article3441574.ece Help a Monkey There are two aspects to creation—the positive (sur) and negative (asur).
