Why do you feel someone's presence even after their death?

The body and the soul Recently, I received a mail from a lady who lost her young son in an accident. When she went to adopt another child, she felt as if her son came to her and told her, “Why do you need somebody else when I am already there?” At times, when she gets up at night, she feels as if her son is sleeping next to her. Friends and people around say that it is psychological and caused by the trauma and pain of losing her child, that it is in her mind. Even the psychologists say so. But no, it is not in the mind. Another one of my readers recently died of a heart attack, all of a sudden. His family wrote to me saying that they can feel him in the house. They feel he is crying and asking for food. They asked me if it was their mind playing tricks on them. Again, it is not the mind. If you think it is the mind, then you can try this experiment. Just think of somebody you do not know and who has gone and try to develop closeness with that person and try getti...

What brought you to this world?

Pause a moment to think, what is it that brought you to this world.  All of us at some point were just a sperm competing with the millions that are produced daily in the human body. The reason why we were born is because we pushed and knocked off the rest of them to come first in the race. This is our basic nature, the reason why we are here - ‘me first’ or simply, selfishness. It is this selfishness that defines everything that we do, including our relationship with people. This is the reason why human relationships do not work out. The reason why you are with someone – be it your friends, parents or spouse is because you want something from them. You are with them only till the time you are getting that from them. As soon as that stops, you will not even look at them. You can try it sometime. The deepest and fondest of relationships come to an end as soon as that give and take is over, and all that remains is grief of what you have lost, what you could have got. Y...

What is the nature of the soul?

To experience the senses and all that the divine has created, the swaroop of a soul is insufficient. Let me share a little story of creation. At the time, there was nothing. Just one vibrant light and a lot of smaller lights (energies) revolving around it in its attraction. They had no desire at this stage, no thought—the state of absolute bliss. Then, suddenly, among the cluster of lights, one small light got a thought—‘I want’—and it set out on a search. As it went, a few more lights joined it. These lights then reached a place abounding in natural beauty, but they were unable to experience it. The main light then gave each of those lights a special suit. Wearing these suits, the lights could experience the many sights. So enamoured were they, that they didn’t even realise that their glow was now covered by the suit, to which they were bound. Slowly, they forgot all about the main light and the state of bliss they were in. Now they were a body, no more a point of light....

Sounds of the Soul

Everything in creation is a dhwani (sound), it is a frequency, a vibration. All our desires too are dhwanis of varying frequencies. Our shastras detail the science of mantras, dhwanis and frequencies through which you can change your desires, your body as well as environment. Om is an extremely subtle dhwani, also called pranav. When Om is chanted, the body vibrates from top to bottom. When you practice the various sadhnas under a guru, the effect is immediate, tangible and physical. The various sadhnas have the ability to manifest (vyakt) the unmanifest (avyakt). If you come to Dhyan Ashram, I will take you through the experience of this dhwani and the vibrations it creates within you. But to hold the subtler frequencies, it is important to increase the capacity of the body through practices detailed in Ashtang Yoga and Sanatan Kriya. Then you will come from avidya (unreality) to vidya (reality)—Om asato ma sadgamaya, tamso jyotir gamayo, mrityur ma amritam ga...

Sattvam rajas tama iti gunaah prakritisambhavaah Nibadhnanti mahaabaaho dehe dehinam avyayam — Bhagvad Gita, Chapter 14, Verse 5                         Yogi Ashwini, When purush (soul) combines with prakriti (creation), in the form of three gunas — satva, rajas and tama — a being takes birth in creation. Light, happiness and gyan are properties of satva, rajas pertains to desires, attachments and resultant actions, and tama is darkness, ignorance and sleep. At all times, all the three gunas are present in a human being, one dominating the other, depending on the desire and state of evolution of being. Ordinary beings are ruled by tama, which is also the guna dominant in animals and other lower beings. When a being leaves the body with the dominance of tama guna, s/he gets the animal yonis and enters into the netherworlds says the Bhagvad G...

The Agni within and cellular life

How is it that the rishis in the Himalayas can maintain their youth till their very last breath? I have personally met some of them; even at 85 and 90 years of age, they exude a glow and radiance that is rarely seen in ordinary men even at the age of 20. Yog is a subject of gyan . No matter how many books you read, unless you have gyan, you cannot move forward. Knowledge is for the brain and the five senses. Gyan, on the other hand, is the core of what you actually are, what you are living through and what you experience. Gyan is the experience that you live. Let us understand the two with an example. We ‘know’ that soul is immortal, and yet the greatest fear among all men, as mentioned in the Patanjali Yogsutras is the fear of death. This is because we do not have the gyan of soul. The fear of death is embedded in each and every cell of our body due to our past life impressions and thus it is very difficult to overcome it. The only way out lies in the Ayurvedic concept of ...

Soul Desire

The mind and the physical brain control the human body and are controlled by the desire of the soul. What does a soul desire? Just close your eyes and observe for two minutes what is going on inside the brain. You will find so many thoughts running inside — children, family, spouse, business, emotions. These thoughts indicate the desire of the soul and it is because of these thoughts or desires that you are unable to go beyond the human existence and are unable to find peace and happiness. All that is physical is temporary and what is temporary is painful. When the mind is engaged in thoughts of the physical, it cannot think of anything beyond it, because at one point of time, it can only do and think of one thing. Even Ayurveda says that of the five senses, only one is active at one time. Words like ekagrata, ek tatva nirsantar abhyas, bhumadhya etc all indicate the path to success as a one-pointed focus. Sanatan Kriya details this. The problem starts when our desires divide....

The journey of the soul

Soul is a unique pranic frequency. In unmanifested form it exists as the part of Para Brahma just as salt exists in ocean. Only when it desires a certain experience or a set of experiences, it chooses to go through the cycle of karmas or birth and death. The basic reason of the soul separating from the source is ego, or recognising one’s existence as an individual. The ancients called it “asmita”, “I”. This was the first step we took when we separated ourselves from the Divine Consciousness which is sukshma-iti-sukshma, subtlest of the subtle, the unmanifested. Ego led the soul to realise that it is an individual and so came into existence the jeev-atma. Chitta is all-pervading, which resides in each one of us as buddhi. Buddhi is unlimited mind, it is the ability in us that has the potential to become unlimited. However, it remains shadowed by manas the sheath, which blurs its vision, which provides logic to the mind and fetters it with the vrittis. Together, buddhi and manas fo...

Yoga - Of Yoga and Yugas...

YOGI ASHWINI The Vedic culture was conceived thousands of years back by the vedic masters who had a direct connection with the creator. This gyan was documented by Rishi Vyas at the beginning of kalyug, approximately 5000 years back. Respect for creation and everything within it and beyond it, is characteristic of Indian culture. Our Vedic ancestors were descendents of Herculean beings who not only gave the world the knowledge of the material world but also the etheric world. Any serious practitioner of the subject of spiritual sciences would clearly see the devolution of mankind, which was anticipated by the Vedic Rishis hence they gave to the world tools as per the anticipated capacity of the beings who would inhabit this planet at different points of time - poetry, art, romance, economics, medicine, physics, chemistry, dance, music..........peace; you name it and they gave it. Creation began from stillness, in the opening yug, In Satyug, the beings were highly evolved and had c...
