Wheels of fire

There are five elements in our body, namely are prithvi (earth); jal (water); agni (fire); vayu (air) and akash (ether). These elements form the basis of the physical manifested creation Earth, which is the grossest and heaviest of the five, forms the foundation of the physical body of a being. It is the element of the mooladhar chakra. Jal (water) is the element of the swadhishthan chakra; agni (fire) is the element of the manipoorak chakra; vayu (air), which is the most mobile of all elements, is the basis of the anahat chakra; and akash (ether or space) is the element of the vishuddhi chakra. The manipoorak chakra — the centre of power located at the point corresponding to the navel in the physical body — is the chakra that carries the agni tatwa. Of all the elements, agni is the most distinctive. While it is possible to pollute the other elements, fire is one element that cannot be polluted. Instead it purifies whatever comes in contact with it. In certain prac...

Activating Your Chakras for a Healthy You - Swadhishthan Chakra

In this series we have been discussing the asans and beej mantras for the various chakras and how one can activate them and strengthen the corresponding body parts. Last time we discussed the mooladhar chakra that is present at the base of the spine. Now we move to the Swadhishthan  chakra. Swadhishthan (Sacral Chakra) : This chakra is located two inches over the Mooladhar at the pubic area. It controls the sexual and urinary system. It is primarily the seat of lower creativity, i.e. a duplication of the self or the body at the pranic level. Its base element is water. The beej mantra for this chakra is VAM. Take your awareness to your breath at the tip of the nostrils. Watch the rhythmic pattern of breath at this point and with every subsequent inhalation, make your breath longer and deeper. Maintaining the awareness of Swadhishthan chakra, start with the chant of VAM. Keep the chant de...

Chakra Beej Kriya- Yog Nidra

In this article, we conclude our series on Chakra Beej Asans, where we discussed the Chakra Beej Kriya, a set of asans and dhwanis that taps into the phenomenal power of six major chakras in the body namely, Mooladhar, Swadhishthan, Manipoorak, Anahad, Vishuddhi and Agya chakras. Having successfully completed the asans and mantras for the six major chakras, we move onto relaxing the body with Yog Nidra. It is extremely important to relax the body and various energy points to distribute the energy generated in the process of kriya. Yognidra:  For this, lie down in shavasana with your body loose, feet slightly apart and palms on either side of the body, facing skyward. Close your eyes and watch your breath at the tip of the nostrils. With one deep inhalation, take your awareness to the left big toe, then all the toes in your left foot, slowly moving upwards to entire foot, ankle, knee and from here gently move up the entire left leg. Similarly then take your awareness to ...

Chakra Beej Kriya: Part 1

Yog is not about twisting and turning yourself into knots and complicated postures, yog taps into the power of consciousness. As you practice yog in totality, as prescribed, you start glowing and the immunity of the body heightens, slowly you begin to exude the glow of the sun. The body that we greet in the mirror everyday is run by a higher force, which is invisible to the naked eye but very clearly visible to a clairvoyant in the form of colours and to a clairaudient in the form of specific sounds. These colours and sounds correspond to certain energy centers in the body, which control and govern various body parts and functions. Much before you identify symptoms of a disease or ailment and decide to visit a doctor, these symptoms are perceived by a yogic practitioner in the form of change in colour, texture, size and sound of various chakras. Sanatan Kriya prescribes various techniques under the topic of self-healing to access this invisible sheath of the body and through...

Defining the process of evolution in a human being

The entire Creation runs on prana shakti, the eternal life-force, an all-pervading phenomenon. All objects, animate and inanimate, are made of prana – including the five elements—prithvi (earth), jal (water), akash (ether), vayu (air), and agni (fire). These elements or the Paanch Mahaprana exist in various permutations and combinations to form different things in Creation including our body. It is these elements that make one woman pretty while another not so; cause one man to be healthy and another to be diseased. Paanch Mahaprana, is the immediate force which governs the physical body and with this the mudras (movements of the hands & fingers). The relation of all five elements with their respective fingers means we can, at will, increase or decrease specific elements in the body, which also forms the basis of our chakras which as we know control the functioning of the physical body. But, before we move on to the kriya, it is essential to understand how these eleme...

Yogic practices for a beautiful, healthy life

ANTI-AGEING | THE POWER CENTER

According to the great epic Ramayana, in the battle between Lord Rama and Ravana, Ravana appeared to be invincible despite repeated attacks by Rama and was killed only when Rama pierced his navel with an arrow. The navel corresponds to the seat of power in the body, the manipoorak chakra that makes up for any weakness and directly controls the digestive system in the body. Ayurveda maintains that death begins in the colon and the modern science agrees with this fact. Hence, in order to ensure a long and healthy life, it is of utmost importance to keep the colon healthy. Realizing this, today the market is flooded with various techniques and equipment to ensure the same. One of these is the hydrocolon therapy. The therapy with the aid of certain instruments washes the intestines with saline water to flush the toxins out of the system. However, being a synthetic process it entails certain side effects such as dehydration, electrolyte imbalance, discomfort, cramps and infection. Du...

The Water Principle

A lotus emerges in water, and is the seat of gods and goddesses. The first avatar of Lord Vishnu, who keeps the Creation going, was the matsya avatar, which emerged from water and guided Manu and the Saptrishis, for Creation to begin. Hence, all creation emerged from water and, it will go back into water. Every culture of the world talks about a massive flood, which brings the end of Creation—the mahapralay, before a new era begins. Our body, too, emerged from water. Water is the governing element of the swadishthan chakra, which is responsible for procreation. Similarly, when the body perishes, whatever is left after the last rites is returned to water. Seventy per cent of the earth is water; so is our body. Water is the element which contains all the other elements —prithvi, akash, vayu and agni. Such is the importance of the jal tattva in Creation and our body. The journey of the spirit begins from the mooladhar, through the swadishthan, manipoorak, anahad,...

Breathe Your Way to a Youthful Glow

With age you always notice a progressive decline in skin texture and complexion. A baby is glowing pink whereas most adults, even in their prime, are plagued with diseased skin and dull complexion. This is because in the process of growing up one is exposed to certain unnatural practices and stimuli from which it was kept protected in the womb. Take for example the simple act of breathing. If you observe a baby breathing you would notice a pronounced abdominal movement. The stomach inflates as it breathes in and deflates as it breathes out. If you observe your own breathing patterns, most likely, you will find it to be the opposite and with little or no abdominal movement…this breathing pattern of yours, holds the key to the way you look and your present state of health. Abdominal breathing maximizes the up and down movement of the diaphragm and ensures that lungs function at their optimal level, that is, they throw out spent air completely and also adequately replenish the body wi...

The Force be with You

Yogi Ashwini clears a few misconceptions about the purpose of the kundalini.   Artistic depictions of chakras and tantric triangles are often based on wild imagination, rather than fact. When you ask some of the artists for more details, they often hit a wall. But you ask someone who meditates on them regularly, you get a better response. Yogi Ashwini of the Dhyan Foundation clarified, “The triangles in the images depict energies. The downward triangle represents Shakti. The upward one represents Shiva. They can be of different colours in different places. The guru of a tantric practitioner will give each student different images to meditate on, like the Shri Yantra, because everyone is different. So their requirements are different. And these triangles are not imagined ones. They really do exist, and can be visible through meditation. They correspond to the different chakras, (dynamos in the etheric body).” He added, “The journey towards consciou...

Stillness Is Strength

Creation emerged from stillness. The ultimate purpose of yog is to gather that stillness inside because stillness is the ultimate strength; in fact, it holds the complete creation in it. Patanjali, the source and fountain of yog calls yog to be chitta vritti nirodh, that is, to still the modifications of mind. There are no asanas in Patanjali’s yogsutras , but only one sloka: ‘sukham sthiram asanam’ which translates as a posture in which one is comfortable and still. Similarly, there are no breathing exercises, only kumbhak, that is the cessation of breath and that too natural, not forced — a state experienced in states of dhyan. It is interesting to see how people dance around trees and breathe like animals in the hope of achieving yog. Chitta comprises of the five senses related to five elements, which is the body. In terms of energy body, these five senses correspond to five basic chakras in the body — mooladhar(sense of smell), swadishthan (sense of taste), manipoorak (...

SHIV, PARVATI AND MARRIAGE

We all know the importance of "balance" in Creation. Everything in the universe is in its place because of balance. Similarly, all the forces of nature, higher or lower, have to be in balance all the time for the sustenance of Creation. The smaller forces are nothing but a microscopic representation of the higher forces of universe. The Ardhanareshwar form of Lord Shiva represents the union of Mata Parvati and Lord Shiva, the union of purush and prakriti. Both are two different aspects of nature but come together to create a perfect harmonious balance. The Ardhanareshwar form represents the union of complementary forces in nature to create a complete whole. They are one, existing without duality. That is the concept of marriage in Vedic philosophy. Marriage between a man and a woman symbolically represents the Ardhanareshwar, a union between two people. When two people come together in marriage, they become an inseparable part of each other for an entire life. There i...
