Why are we born? I get mails from people all across the world asking the reason for birth. One common denominator in all these mails is that everybody is in pain and are looking for that something more. Primarily there are two purposes to birth and they have not changed since creation began.
First is to go through experience. Experiences were created in the form of a physical body the physical creation and soul was sent to get that experience. Second is to go back to where you started from because with every new life, your experiences are getting grosser. As times progress, the experiences will get worse and the pain will increase. Only when we choose to go back and look for a guru will the pain begin to reduce. We must not forget that we are all linked to each other through the five elements, through collective consciousness, through oneness of the divine. It is our ego that separates us from others and makes us go through our own personal experiences. It is okay to experience but it is not okay to desire the same experience over and over again which will definitely happen if there is no guru. There is no third purpose to birth. Any third purpose – relationships, friends, spouses or children – is not going to work. Relationships are frivolous and short-term. They will deteriorate in a few years or maybe a lifetime. But they will definitely be over by the next birth and you will be looking for something different and will experience more pain in the process.

Shiv is the doer and may be likened to a vehicle. If you remove ‘i’ from Shiv, it becomes ‘shav’ (corpse). The ‘i’ represents Shakti, which is the fuel that energises this vehicle to perform action. Shakti is the force of the physical world. Shivratri is the night of merger of Shiv and Shakti making a complete whole. Shiv and Shakti pertain to manifest creation and arise from the unmanifest. The journey back to the unmanifest can be carved only through their complete merger which is the ultimate purpose of yoga and Sanatan Kriya . A practical example of merger of Shiv and Shakti is the institution of marriage where the merger of male and female leads to manifestation of a new life. If there is a mismatch in this merger of male and female, or Shiv and Shakti, the marriage remains incomplete. This imbalance is evident in the progeny who will exhibit anti-social and undesirable behaviour and traits. The rishis of yesteryear explained how incompleteness sets into the child in t...
