Yogiji's column in Andhra Prabha |
The unmanifest gave rise to dhwani (sound) and from this sound emerged the entire manifested creation. Every sound is a specific frequency and hence generates a specific effect. The roar of a lion creates an environment of dread all around, the call of a cuckoo soothes and a lullaby puts the child to sleep. In earlier times, a conch was blown before the start of a battle in order to generate fear in the opponent’s army. People living close to jungles used to beat drums to keep fierce beasts and evil spirits away. All this was done keeping in mind the effect of the sound generated.
The vedic seers had mastered the science of sound eons ago and gave us codified forms of sound energy, called mantras. There are three components of a mantra – shakti, beej andkeel. Together they contain the total effect of the mantra. Shakti refers to the driving force in amantra, beej is the potential of a mantra (just like the seed is a potential tree) and keel binds the mantra to the purpose for which it is intended. (Sound waves traverse large distances in a matter of seconds, keel ensures the energy unleashed stays where it has to and does not dissipate.)
The human body too is a combination of various frequencies and specific sounds effect specific parts of the body. As you progress in Sanatan Kriya, you can actually see the effect of different sounds on your body. For instance, Shri Maha Mrityunjay Mantra directly affects the energy channels (nadis) in the body. Any imbalance in the body first sets into the nadis and then shows signs in the physical body. This mantra removes the imbalance at the level of thenadis itself, preventing the disease from setting into the body. However, for a mantra to have the right effect it is important to perfect its chant and intonations under the guidance of a Guru, who is siddha in the mantra. . Incorrect and faulty uchharan can do more harm than good.
The science of mantra is powerful and precise but its purpose is to aid the Creation and not solve individual personal problems. These days, people ask me for mantras to solve their personal problems. While chanting specific mantras can rid you of a particular problem, it does not rid you of your karmic baggage (the one you have accumulated as past-life carry-overs). As soon as one problem gets solved, the unbalanced karma takes shape of a new problem, so once again you go searching for a new mantra. It becomes a vicious circle…no wonder the businesses of those 'dealing' in mantras are blooming! There is no dearth of people sellingmantras for just about anything, be it an ailment, financial crisis, marital issues, career problems, relationship problems, you name it and they have a mantra for it. However, it does not work this way.
The vedic seers who gave us all these sciences never put a fee to it, they imparted this gyan for the well-being of creation, sans any personal interest. As soon as you tie the ancient sciences of yog and mantra sadhna to maya, they lose their efficacy.
